本日は記事より"pan-"を拾います。
始めどのような意味か、わからなかったのですが、調べてみると"pandemic"とつながり、納得できました。"pandemic"は「広域流行の(病気)、感染爆発の」の意味ですが、今回の"pan-"は"pandemic"の"pan"と同様の接頭辞だということがわかりました。"pan-"がつくと、「全...,総...,汎...」の意味がつきます。(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』)ODには"All-inclusive, especially in relation to the whole of a continent, racial group, religion, etc..."とあります。たとえば、
•Pan-Asiatic 全アジアの
•Pan-Islamism 汎イスラム主義
•pantheism 汎神論
などの例があります。
なお、「汎」の意味に関して、音が似ていると思い、調べてみると、やはり関わりがあります。複数の辞書で「英語のpan に字を当てたもの」、「英語のpanの音訳」などと説明がされていました。音訳とは「漢字の音や訓を借りて、外国語や外来語を書き表すこと。」(デジタル大辞泉) のことです。他の言語では、例えば、「仏陀」(梵語)、「合羽」(ポルトガル語)などがあるそうですが、英語の音訳には「倶楽部(クラブ)」、「馬穴(バケツ)」、「浪漫(ロマン)」などがあります。
