今朝、先生に教えて頂いた記事から取り上げさせて頂きます。
兵庫県神戸市で開催されている光の祭典「ルミナリエ」の会場で、強風の影響でイルミネーションが倒れました。当時、神戸の最大瞬間風速は、２６．７メートルを記録した。

Kobe Luminarie has been held in December of each year beginning in 1995 to mourn the victims of the Great Hanshin Earthquake and also to pray for recovery. The quake devastated the city and surrounding areas in January 1995.
Organizers said strong wind blew down part of a decoration that was 84 meters long and 9 meters high, surrounding a fountain. The panels were discovered lying on the ground at about 5:30 AM on Friday. 11 nearby tents were also damaged.
No one was injured.
A local weather station said strong wind hit the city early in the day. It said wind of up to 70 kilometers per hour was recorded at around the time the damage was spotted.

取り上げる表現は、“panel”です。この表現の意味を考えると、「パネル」がぱっと思いつきます。ここでは、イルミネーションとして用いられています。“panel”の英語定義を確認してみると、Dictionary.comには、“a comparatively thin, flat piece of wood or the like, as a large piece of plywood”と記載されていました。今回の出来事で倒れたイルミネーションは、板に装飾されていたため、イルミネーションではなく、装飾した板が倒れたと英語では捉えることがわかります。日本語と英語での捉え方の違いがあることに面白さを感じます。(Nao)
