Probe underway into MSDF selection of next-generation choppers
TOKYO — A special unit under the defense minister is investigating whistle-blower information on the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s selection of its next-generation utility helicopters, Defense Minister Gen Nakatani admitted.
Although the minister declined to elaborate, ministry sources said that the MSDF’s preferred choice has been improperly changed by the brass at the Maritime Staff Office from the model proposed by officials in charge.
“To ensure fairness in the procedure, a defense inspection is under way,” Nakatani told a press conference, while stressing, “It is not because any irregularities or scandal have been confirmed.”
