Knick Names
Good morning on this crisp Monday.
When Coach Derek Fisher was doling out reading to his Knicks players this summer, he assigned Kristaps Porzingis a book by Jon Gordon called “The Positive Dog,” which preaches the importance of optimistic thinking.
It was a gracious if unsubtle gesture: Porzingis, the team’s 7-foot-3-inch Latvian rookie, was greeted on draft night with an unwelcoming chorus of boos.
These days, the choir at Madison Square Garden is singing a different tune, hailing Porzingis with every block and put-back dunk.
It’s easy to understand the newfound adoration. One month into the season, Porzingis is averaging 14 points and nine rebounds in only 28 minutes a game. And at 20 years old, he seems to possess untold potential.
Perhaps only one question remains for the lanky Latvian: What should fans call him?
見出しにある“Knick Names”が気になりました。通常のニックネーム（nickname）とはスペリングが異なるようです。辞書には記載がありませんでしたが、今回取り上げられているのが、ニューヨーク・ニックスというNBAのチームということから、“nickname”とチーム名の“Knicks(ニックス)”がかけられているのではないかと考えました。バスケットボールには詳しくないですが、これで1チームの名前を知ることが出来ました。（Green）
