The 51 most commonly misused words and phrases - do you get these wrong?
A linguist has pointed out the most common mistakes we make while using the English language. It's surprising how many mistakes people make when they use the English language. A linguist from Harvard University is here to help - he has created a list of the words we misuse the most. In his latest book, "The Sense of Style", Harvard cognitive scientist and linguist Steven Pinker explores the most common words and phrases that people stumble over. It is reminiscent of Strunk and White's classic "The Elements of Style," but is based on linguistics and updated for the 21st century.
本日は"reminiscent"を取り上げます。調べてみますと「形〔通例be ~ of A〕A(人・物など) を思い出させる。思わせる、 しのばせる」とあります。例文: He is somewhat reminiscent of John Lennon 彼はやや、ジョン・レノンを彷彿とさせる (『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』) 。ODには"1.Tending to remind one of something. 2.Suggesting something by resemblance"と定義されていました。語源を調べてみますとラテン語の"remembering"を意味する'reminiscent-'から派生したとあります。(ibid.)
なお、本文にある"The Element of Style"は1920年にWilliam Strunk, Jr.とE. B. Whiteによって書かれた英文ライティング参考書の古典とされており、今に至るまでベストセラーであるそうです。Steven Pinker による英語話者がよく間違える表現をリスト化した著書、"The Sense of Style"の名前が、古典の"The Element of Style"を彷彿させることから"reminiscent"の語が用いられていると考えられます。
母語話者が間違えやすい英語を見てみると、日本人の英語学習者の間違えのタイプとは違っているところが興味深いです。日本語母語話者として、「全然いいよ」といった言い方や「食べれる」など「ら」を抜いてしまったり、「雰囲気」を「ふいんき」と言ってしまったりします。記事にあるリストも、英語母語話者にとっては、このような「間違い日本語」のような感覚なのでしょうか。(Dew)
