取り上げる表現は”testudines’”です。手持ちの辞書には記載がなかったのでインターネットで調べてみると、『Weblio』に「陸ガメ類と海ガメ類」(tortoises and turtles)という意味が載っていました。具体的に言えばそうなりますが、生物学用語「カメ目」の英語名”Testudines”のことです。
『Wikipedia』によれば、ラテン語で「カメ」は” testūdō”と言い、これは陶製の容器”testū”や、煉瓦や土製の容器”testa”に由来するのだそうです。そして”testūdō"の複数形 “testūdinēs”が生物群としての「カメ類」の呼称、また和名の「カメ目」にあたる学名 “Testudines” になっているとのことです。(bookmark)
