わたくしもninetailくん同様，今朝先生から表現を教えて頂きました（1限目まではA30におりました）。同じ記事から取り上げるため、記事についての説明は割愛させていただきます。

今回取り上げる表現は、“The long nose of the law”です。元となっている表現は、“the long arm of the law”です。“nose”が用いられているのは、記事の内容にある芳香剤についてで、芳香剤の香りを嗅ぐということから関連付けているからです。
では、意味を確認してみると、Cambridge Dictionaryには、“the police. You can't escape the long arm of the law (= the police will catch you if you have done something illegal).”と記載されています。意味は、「警察」です。しかし、この表現には法律からは逃れられないというニュアンスも含まれています。今回の場合、バックミラーに芳香剤を吊るすことは、違反行為であり、決して法律から逃れることができないと捉えられることができます。(Nao)
