wet behind the ears 復習

映画「天使にラブ・ソングを…」から取り上げます。
修道院の音楽室にて、シスターたちの歌を上達させるために今後どうしていくか、メアリー・ラザラスとデロリスが話し合います。

Deloris: How often do they rehearse?
Sister Lazarus: Twice a week, couple hours.
Deloris: Not enough. I mean, listen to them. They really need a lot of work. They gotta rehearse every day.
Sister Lazarus: She’s good. Well, do you think they really could get better?
Deloris: I don’t know. They’re pretty raw.
Sister Lazarus: Wet behind the ears.
Mary Patrick：Oh, please, let us try.

今回取り上げるのは“wet behind the ears”です。辞書には「（still）未熟［未経験］な≪子供が耳のうしろをふかないことから；not dry behind the earsともいう≫」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）、“very young and without much experience of life”（LDOCE）とありました。吹き替えでは「初心者ですものね。」とされていました。簡単な単語で構成されているので、語源と絡めて覚えやすいのではないかと思いましたし、体の一部が入っていて、なんだか親しみがわきました。（Green）
