on the house 復習

映画『A.I. Artificial Intelligence』(2001)から表現を拾います。
本当の人間の男の子にしてもらいたくてBlue Fairy「青い妖精」を探すロボットのDavidは、なんでも知っているというDr. Knowのもとへやって来ました。Dr. Knowはお金を払うと質問に答えてくれるホログラフィの老人で、一種の娯楽用のマシーンです。

Dr. Know: Question me, you pay the fee. Two for five, you get one free.
Joe to David: Two questions cost five Newbucks with a third question on the house.
In this day and age, nothing casts more than information.

ロボットのJoeがDavidにルールを繰り返し説明しています。
取り上げる表現は”on the house”です。
『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』によると、「<飲食物が>経営者のおごりで；無料で」とありました。LDOCEで確認してみると”if drinks or meals are on the house, you do not have to pay for them because they are provided free by the owner of the bar, restaurant etc”と定義されています。
“house”は「家」や「議院」以外にも「レストラン；旅館；酒場」という意味があります。また、この”on”は「…のおごりで、…持ちで」という負担を表します。ゼミでも”It’s on me.”などという言い方で学んだことがありました。(bookmark)
