『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』には”bête noire”で「特に嫌いなもの[人]」とありました。LDOCEにも”somebody's bête noire”で”the person or thing that someone dislikes most”という定義が載っていました。

どうやらフランス語から来た表現のようです。”bête”はフランス語で「野獣、間抜けな、馬鹿な」などという意味があり、”noir”は「黒、暗黒」を意味するようです。”noir”は男性形、“noire”女性形だそうですが、男子チームなので”noir”が使われているのではないかという気がしました。また、” bête noire”は/beɪt ˈnwɑː/という発音になります。

準々決勝では完敗のフランスでしたが、ニュージーランドにとってはフランスが天敵のような存在だった時代もあったようです。(bookmark)
