detainee 復習

ユネスコが南京大虐殺の関連資料を世界記憶遺産に登録したことを受け、日本政府はユネスコの分担金を見直す考えを示しています。
Japan said Tuesday that it may cut funding for UNESCO after the U.N. world heritage body included documents on a World War II-era massacre by Japanese troops on a Chinese city in its Memory of the World register, a move Tokyo criticized as biased.

取り上げるのは”detainee”です。
“detain”を『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』で引いてみると、「<容疑者など>を留置[勾留]する」と書かれており、それに「…される人、…する人」を表す”ee”がついていることが分かります。よって”detainee”は「（政治活動などによる）勾留者」という意味になります。記事の文では日本の世界記憶遺産として登録されたシベリア抑留の資料について書かれています。
また、先日のゼミでは、とある記事の中で同じくシベリア抑留について言及されている箇所から、”intern”という表現を学びました。”intern”には「<捕虜・敵国人・外国人など>を（一定の区域内に）抑留〔強制収容〕する」（『G4』）という意味があり、受動態で使われていました（be interned in Siberia）。こちらも”internee”で「被抑留者」という意味になります。
それぞれLDOCEで定義を見てみると、”detainee”は”someone who is officially kept in a prison, usually because of their political views”、”internee”は”someone who is put into prison during a war or for political reasons, without having had a TRIAL”とあり、officiallyかそうでないかがポイントではないかと思います。「シベリア抑留」という日本語から考えても、英英辞典での意味の違いから考えても、今回の内容では”intern”の方がよりふさわしいのではないかという気がしました。(bookmark)
