New York Today: A Whirlwind Week
Good morning on this blustery Monday.
It’s going to be a busy week.
We’re used to important visitors coming through and clogging up our highways and byways (and every street in between), and usually, we don’t complain. That much.
But this time, it’s a little intense.
As you may have heard, Pope Francis is coming to town on Thursday, and he’ll be on the move, taking his road closures and snarled traffic with him.
He’s planning to take a spin through Central Park, visit the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum, speak at the United Nations, offer a Mass at Madison Square Garden, and stop in at Our Lady Queen of Angels, a Catholic school in East Harlem.
Time Warner Cable is even introducing a round-the-clock Papal Visit 2015 channel.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has called it an “unprecedented” security situation.
And expect even more international visitors, as preparations are underway for the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. Around 170 leaders and dignitaries from all over the world (and their many aides and handlers) will descend on the East Side.
The gathering usually shuts down much of Midtown East, and the Police Department is warning you: Take public transportation.
Gothamist has lists of street closures for both traffic nightmares, but they forgot one thing.
Beyoncé is coming to Central Park on Saturday for the Global Citizen Festival.
And the Queen needs open roads (probably).
