venom 復習

毎日新聞の記事から取り上げさせて頂きます。ヘビの抗毒薬が２０１９年まで入手困難であることが分かりました。

LONDON (AP) -- Doctors Without Borders says the world will run out of one of the most effective treatments for snakebites next year, risking the lives of tens of thousands of people, mostly in developing countries.

今回取り上げる表現は、“venom”です。まず、意味を確認してみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）には、「（ヘビ・サソリ・ハチなどの）毒液、毒」と記載されていました。そして、LDOCEで英語の定義を見てみると、“a liquid poison that some snakes, insects etc produce when they bite or sting you”とありました。ここでは、“anti”が一緒に用いられています。すると、意味が「抗毒素、抗毒血清」に変わります。今回は、後者の意味の方がしっくりくると思います。また、同じ意味の表現で、“antivenin”もあります。共に覚えていくと良いかもしれません。(Nao)
