JPタワーで8月29日の１日限定で開催が予定されている「大相撲KITTE場所」に関する記事を取り上げます。ちなみに、東京都２３区内での大相撲の巡業開催は１８年ぶりだそうです。
JP Tower to host sumo exhibition bouts on Aug. 29
A glitzy skyscraper in front of JR Tokyo Station is set for an unlikely installation at its atrium — a genuine sumo ring.
Wrestlers will take part in exhibition bouts in the ring at the KITTE shopping area in JP Tower on Aug. 29, with the facility hosting a sumo-related exhibit ahead of the event.
Among the quirky items to be exhibited include a model of a life-size sumo wrestler’s stomach, including its firmness, and a bowl with a mountain of rice showing how much of the grain a wrestler eats per meal.
A gimmick called “sumo wrestler camera” is also available for visitors where after taking a photograph the image turns into a well-rounded face with topknot hair.
今回取り上げるのは、“topknot hair”という表現です。単語からでも「髪の結び目が頭の上にある髪型」と想像できますが、LDOCEで調べてみると、“hair that is tied together on top of your head”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』でも確認してみると、「（人の）まげ、ちょんまげ」「（17〜18世紀に女性が頭につけた）チョウ結びのリボン」といった意味がありました。そのため、今回の記事では「ちょんまげ、大銀杏」を表していると分かります。(ninetails)
