安倍内閣は14日、戦後70年談話（安倍談話）を閣議決定しました。安倍談話は村山談話や小泉談話の約3倍となるおよそ3400字で、過去の談話を引き継ぐ考えを示しました。

The following is a translation of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's statement on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, as released by the prime minister's office on Aug. 14, 2015.

In Japan, the postwar generations now exceed eighty per cent of its population. We must not let our children, grandchildren, and even further generations to come, who have nothing to do with that war, be predestined to apologize. Still, even so, we Japanese, across generations, must squarely face the history of the past. We have the responsibility to inherit the past, in all humbleness, and pass it on to the future.

今回取り上げるのは、“be predestined”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“something that is predestined is certain to happen because it has been decided by God or fate”と定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認してみると、「〔〜するように〕前もって（生まれる前から）運命づけられた」という意味が見つかりました。ちなみに、安倍談話では「（先の世代の子どもたちに、謝罪を続ける）宿命を背負わせてはいけない」となっていました。(ninetails)
