DUI 復習

NFLのthe San Francisco 49ersに所属するAldon Smith選手が逮捕されました。今回の容疑はhit and run（あて逃げ），DUI（飲酒運転），vandalism（公共物破壊）です。
記事にもあるように「飲酒運転」は英語でDUIと表記されます。これはdriving under the influenceを略したもの（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。このthe influenceは言うまでもなく，お酒の影響を指し，さらに麻薬などの使用にも用いられます。実際，辞書にはunder the influenceで「【酒に】酔っ払って; 【麻薬などの】影響を受けて」とありました（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。（Koyamamoto）

49ers release linebacker Aldon Smith after latest DUI arrest
Aldon Smith is in alcohol-related trouble with the law again.
That was enough for the San Francisco 49ers to release their star pass rusher, the team announcing the move Friday afternoon.
Smith was arrested early Friday morning for hit and run, DUI and vandalism, the Santa Clara Police Department confirmed Friday on Twitter. Santa Clara County Jail records show Smith’s bail was set at $26,000.
After posting bail, Smith told KTVU-TV that “justice will be served, the truth will come out” and denied driving drunk.
