cenotaph 復習

１９４５年、日本が終戦を迎えてから今年で７０年が経ちました。この記事は、第二次世界大戦を経験した人に関するものです。

Higa's postwar memories are slipping away from her as she developed dementia three years ago. However, she says the sorrow she felt that day when her mother died in her arms will never disappear.

今回拾い上げる表現は、“cenotaph”です。文脈から予測すると、記念碑ではないかと思いました。そこで辞書を見ると意味は『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）「（死者をいたむ）記念碑」です。さらにLDOCEで英語の定義を確認してみると、“a MONUMENT built to remind people of soldiers, sailors etc who were killed in a war and are buried somewhere else”とありました。捉え方の違いはあまりありません。また語源はどこから来たのだろうと疑問に思い、調べてみたところ、ギリシャ語の「からの墓」の意味から来ていました。戦後７０年が経ったことで戦争について考える良い機会だと思うので、自分も学んでいき今後に生かせたらなと思います。(Nao)
