最古のコーランが大学の図書館で発見されました。この書物はBirmingham大学の図書館で100年近く誰にも眠っていたようです。放射性炭素年代測定を行った結果，1370年以上前に書かれたもののようです。1000年以上の前の書物が現存するのはすごいと思いました。
記事の中で気になった単語は"parchment"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「羊皮紙（羊･ヤギの皮から精製した紙），（羊皮紙の）写本，文書」などという意味がありました。関連する単語で，"vellum"を見ると，「上質皮紙，ベラム （子羊・子ヤギの革で作る）」というものもあります。子供のヤギの革のほうが高級品のようです。（Ume）
'Oldest' Koran fragments found in Birmingham University
The tests, carried out by the Oxford University Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, showed that the fragments, written on sheep or goat skin, were among the very oldest surviving texts of the Koran.
These tests provide a range of dates, showing that, with a probability of more than 95%, the parchment was from between 568 and 645.
"They could well take us back to within a few years of the actual founding of Islam," said David Thomas, the university's professor of Christianity and Islam.
"According to Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad received the revelations that form the Koran, the scripture of Islam, between the years 610 and 632, the year of his death."
