Man arrested for killing 77-year-old father in Sapporo

Police in Sapporo have arrested an unemployed 49-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 77-year-old father with whom he lived.
According to police, the victim was found dead in his apartment in Teine Ward by his 84-year-old wife when she returned home at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Sankei Shimbun reported that the couple’s son—who had gone missing—was picked up 9 a.m. Sunday, while driving in nearby Tobetsu town.
Police said the man has confessed to killing his father by violently kicking and hitting him on Saturday afternoon. There were also strangulation marks on the victim’s neck. The suspect was quoted as saying that he got tired of his father berating him.

今回取り上げるのは、“strangulation mark”という表現です。“strangulation”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“the act of killing someone by pressing on their throat, or the fact of being killed in this way”と定義が載っていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』には、「絞殺、窒息」といった意味がありました。そのため、“strangulation mark”で「絞殺痕、圧迫痕」を表していると分かりました。(ninetails)
