Sperm whales can remember their friends over many years

The longest study of sperm whales to date suggests they never forget a friend

Whales are the biggest animals living in the ocean, and include the largest creatures ever to have lived. Within this group of giant animals, sperm whales hold a unique record: they are the largest hunting animal with teeth.
Sperm whales are powerful predators. They plunge into the freezing blackness of the deep ocean, hunting for squid - including the giant squid.
But they also have rich and varied social lives. They live in family groups and support each other.
The latest research suggests that sperm whales' extended families are just as important to them as our own. The whales' social lives are crucial to their success.

“echolocation”を取り上げます。クジラの生態、加えて“echo-”と“location”から成っている点から、音(波)を発しその反響で周囲の状況を確認する事、というような意味だと推測できます。では、適当な訳語はどうなるのでしょう。『G3』で確認してみると「反響定位、音波探知」とあります。なるほど、これならしっくりきます。私はこの言葉から「ソナー」を連想しました。調べてみると「水中音波探知機」とありました。“sound navigation and ranging”の略語で“sonar”というそうです。合わせて覚えてしまいたいものです。

ところで、マッコウクジラの英名が“sperm whale”という事には驚きました。“sperm”の意味を考えると、尚更不思議でなりません。由来には諸説あるようですが、その一つに、マッコウクジラの頭部に詰まっている「脳油」というものに関係があるという説があるようです。この脳油が“sperm”に似ている事から“sperm whale”と名付けられたというのです。いずれにせよ、マッコウクジラにはどうも気の毒な英名ですね。(potter)
