prevail 復習
ギリシャのバルファキス財務相が辞任を表明しました。5日に行われた財政緊縮策への賛否を問う国民投票で政府側の勝利という結果を収めたので，辞任表明は予想外の出来事でした。
Yanis Varoufakis, Greece’s combative finance minister, who took a strong stand in demanding that creditors write off some of his country’s debts, abruptly resigned on Monday morning.
Mr. Varoufakis had played a key role in rallying votes for a resounding “no” on a referendum on Sunday that asked Greeks whether they were willing to accept an arrangement with creditors that would require considerable further austerity, such as pension cuts. Mr. Varoufakis had threatened last week to resign if a “yes” vote passed, and his decision to resign after he and his allies prevailed in the referendum was unexpected.
今回、UG先生に教えて頂いた表現を取り上げます。それは、“prevail”です。これを目にすると「普及する」や「広く行われている」という意味をぱっと思いつきました。しかし、これでは、本文と一致しません。他にどのような意味があるか、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）を見てみると、「（人を）説得する」や「（人・物・事が）打ち勝つ、まさる、優先する」がありました。今回の場合、後者の意味である「打ち勝つ、勝利する」が用いられています。また、英英辞典を見てみると、Longman Dictionary of Contemporary Englishには、“if a person, idea, or principle prevails in a fight, argument etc, they are successful in the end”と載っていました。 (Nao)
