今日の午前９時の直前に「うるう秒」の１秒が挿入されました。うるう秒の実施は、日曜日だった２０１２年７月１日以来、３年ぶりで、平日の実施は１８年ぶりとなります。

On July 1, a leap second was inserted just before 9 a.m. for the first time in three years, and the first leap second on a weekday in 18 years.
In Japan, the leap second is managed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology in Koganei, Tokyo. Elementary school students gathered in front of a digital clock on the outside wall of the institute showing Japanese Standard Time counting down the seconds until the clock showed 8:59:60, when they raised a large cheer.

今回取り上げる表現は、“leap second”です。本文を読んでいく中で、「うるう秒」ではないかと予想しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）を見てみると、予想通り「うるう秒」と記載していました。また、“leap day”で「うるう日（２月２９日）」、“leap year”で「うるう年」とありました。また、なぜ“leap”を用いるだろうか。そこで、調べてみると、ひとつの説を発見しました。通常の３６５日は、７で割ると１余るので、翌年の同じ日は曜日がひとつずつずれていきます。うるう年の場合、１日増えるので、曜日がひとつ跳びます。そこから「曜日が跳ぶ」ということから“leap”を用いるようになりました。(Nao)
