An Earful From a Barber in Queens
Dear Diary:
Went for a haircut in my Queens neighborhood, but my regular barber was out. I let the one, elderly barber who was in do the job, even though I’ve avoided him for years. This isn’t because of his skills, but because something about him creeps me out — perhaps the blond rugrat on his head that looks like it was born, raised and died there about 20 years ago.
He knows I’m a bit leery of him, but I hope he can just cut my hair without chitchat so I don’t have to make nice.
今回取り上げるのは“chitchat”です。調べてみると、「雑談（をする）、うわさ話（をする）」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）、“conversation about things that are not very important”（LDOCE）とありました。文中では「理髪店で髪を切られている間の雑談」となります。私は美容院に行く際、個人的にその雑談が少し楽しみな時もありますが、友人の中でも最低限のみしか話さないという人もいます。（Green）
