関東もすっかり梅雨入りし、じっとりと雨が降る日が多くなっています。防災科学技術研究所は、地豪雨を予測し、ユーザーに通知するシステムの開発を続けており、関東地域でモニター1000人に使ってもらうところまで開発段階を進めているようです。

Heavy rain warning system being tested

A system that forecasts and notifies users of imminent heavy rainfall has been developed by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. With the help of high-fidelity radars, the system senses rain 10 minutes before it reaches the ground and automatically sends out e-mails forecasting the localized downpour.

The institute has just begun testing the new system with the help of 1,000 monitors spread across the Kanto region and intends to work with local governments in the near future to prepare for the swift evacuation of residents in case of rainfall that leads to a natural disaster.

拾い上げるのは“high-fidelity”です。文脈から考えると「高精度の」といった意味を連想します。“fidelity”は「1.(人・主義などに対する)忠義・忠実 2,(複写・報告などが)そっくりなこと。正確さ 3.(再生音の)忠実度」(『G』より)という語義を持ちます。この“fidelity”と“highly”の複合語、ここではレーダーを修飾しているため「高精度の」あるいは単に「高性能の」といった意味合いで用いられているのでしょう。

ここ最近は局地的な豪雨が多く、傘を持たずに雨に打たれてしまっている人をよく見ます。やはり予測するのが難しいものなので、このシステムが完成されれば、私たちの生活を随分助けてくれるでしょう( potter)
