Man arrested for disturbing the peace in Machida
Police in Tokyo’s Machida have arrested a 71-year-old man for disturbing the peace and interfering with official police business.
According to police, at around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, they received a noise complaint from an apartment complex. As police officers arrived at the apartment, a man standing on a second-floor balcony threw a piece of metal at them, Sports Nippon reported. The man, identified as Akio Kaneko, was also heard screaming, “I’ve got a rope. I’m going to kill myself!”
At around 10:45 a.m., police officers broke into the apartment and apprehended Kaneko. Several knives and other dangerous items were found on the balcony where he had been standing at the time of his arrest.
今回取り上げる表現は“disturb the peace”です。“disturb”を辞書で調べてみると、「<人・物・事が><治安・平静・秩序など>をかき乱す、混乱させる」(『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』)、“to change a normal situation in a way that causes problems”(LDOCE)、“disturb the peace”で、「治安を乱す」(『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店)、“to behave in a noisy and unpleasant way in public”(LDOCE)とありました。そのままの意味かもしれませんが、今まで治安についての話をする際には、“safe”や“dangerous”ばかり使っていた事を思い出し、同じ単語ばかりではなく、こういった表現も身につけなければいけないと実感しました。(Green)
