novel 復習

オランダ・サッカーリーグ一部、エールディヴィジ所属のアヤックスが母の日に、ユニークな試みをしました。それは、母の日を祝し、選手たちは花束を片手に、自分の母親とともに入場するというものです。チームが快勝したこともあり、母親にはもちろん、選手にとっても素敵な母の日の思い出となったようです。

IT’S MOTHER’S DAY today in some countries — although Ireland isn’t one of them, so this isn’t a reminder for you to rush down to the local supermarket to pick up a box of their finest Milk Tray.

In Holland, Ajax came up with a novel way of marking the occasion ahead of their Eredivisie game against Cambuur. The Dutch club’s players were accompanied to the field at the Amsterdam Arena this afternoon by their mammies.

今回取り上げるのは、「(今までになく)新しい、奇抜な」(Genius 3より)という意味の形容詞“novel”です。過去に、何度か登場したものですが、久しく取り上げられていなかったようなので、復習程度にと紹介させていただきました。以前の記事にもあるように、“novel”の原義は「新しい(事)」であることからこの意味をもつ形容詞にもなるのでしょう。

私も細やかなものですが、母の日に贈り物をしました。喜んでくれれば幸いです。いずれは、資格試験などで胸を張れるような結果を残し、両親への贈り物としたいものです。(potter)
