The number of volcanic earthquakes recorded in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, surged Tuesday, with 98 recorded before 3 p.m. compared with 34 for all of Monday, the Meteorological Agency said.

今回取り上げるのは、”off-limits”という表現です。The Free Dictionary by FARLEXには、形容詞で” not to be entered or frequented by a designated group”とありました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で調べてみると、「〔⋯に〕立ち入り禁止の」、「〈話題などが〉触れてはならない」とありました。ちなみにハイフンを抜いて”off limits”とすれば、名詞で「立入禁止区域」を意味します。はじめは”limit”を「制限、限界」などととらえてしまいました。しかし、”limit”には「境界（線）、（超えてはいけない）範囲」といった空間的な意味もあるので、”off”が伴って「立ち入り禁止」を表していると分かりました。(ninetails)
