大詰めを迎えた環太平洋連携協定（TPP）ですが，米国のラッセル国務次官補が外交問題評議会で進捗状況をたずねられ，用いた表現は grabbing distanceでした。

US official: US, Japan close to TPP trade deal

A senior US State Department official says a deal with Japan on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact is within “grabbing distance."

US Assistance Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel made the remark at a symposium in New York on Monday. Russel referred to 2 days of TPP talks in Tokyo between Japan's Economic Revitalization Minister Akira Amari and US Trade Representative Michael From an.　 Russel described the negotiations as making steady headway. He said an accord between Japan and the United States is the linchpin to concluding the entire TPP negotiations covering 12 countries.

これは「つかむことのできる距離」，すなわち「手の届く距離」ということです。交渉事が最終段階になっていることを伝えていますが，grabには，「…をぎゅっとつかむ」，「ひっつかむ」，「 ひったくる」という意味があり，個人的には米国の大国主義が透けるような表現に感じました。

先生にたずねてみますと，grabbingの大元 動詞　grabはマイナスイメージだけではなく，「ちょっと取ってくれない」（例：Can you grab the salt?）や「タクシーをひらってくるよ。」（例：I'll go grab a taxi.）のようにgetの代わりに使われることもあり，この形容詞には「いやらしさ」はないのでは...とのお答えでした。
