Veteran Michihiro Ogasawara broke a tie with a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning as the Chunichi Dragons fought past the Yomiuri Giants 5-3 on Tuesday night at Nagoya Dome for their first win of the season.
取り上げるのは“break a tie”です。“tie”を調べてみると（［通例単数形で］同点、引き分け、タイ）とありました。（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）また、LDOCEにも“(the result of) a game, election, etc, in which each competitor gains an exactly equal number of points, votes, etc.”と記されていました。
つまり、“break a tie”は「同点を壊す」という直訳から転じて「均衡を破る」という意味が読み取れます。テニスのtie breakも同じ様な発想からでしょうか。
