fraudsters

Fraudsters tricking elderly people into flying to Tokyo to hand over cash

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is warning people about a rise in cases in which fraudsters are tricking elderly people in provincial areas into flying to Tokyo's Haneda Airport to hand over money.

In most of these cases, elderly people hurriedly board aircraft at the strong urging of swindlers posing as their sons, and end up handing over massive amounts of money to those who call themselves the proxies of the victims' sons.

The MPD said it has confirmed 13 such cases, including unsuccessful fraud attempts, since Jan. 28 this year. In these cases, men and women in their 70s and 80s were told to fly to Haneda Airport from Hokkaido, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures, and lost a total of about 25.1 million yen to swindlers, investigators said.
