イギリス政府による，全家庭にスマートメーターを取り付けるという計画が困難に直面しております。スマートメーターとは，各電化製品でどのくらい電力を消費したのかを示す機械です。この装置を利用し，各家庭が電力を節約すれば，導入コストよりも，節約費が上回ると考えられておりました。しかし，導入にあたって数々の課題が生じており，導入費用のほうが高くつく可能性が出てきたようです。
記事の中で気になった単語は"crossroad"です。「交差点」という意味以外に，「（人生・組織・制度などの）（重大な）岐路，分かれ道」などという意味がありました（『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂））。交差点を思い浮かべれば，正面，左右どれを選んでも違う方向に向かうため「人生や組織の岐路」という比喩として使えますね。（Ume）

Mr Yeo said the government was at a crossroads with its smart-metering policy.

Smart meters will eventually allow consumers to know exactly how much electricity each appliance uses, in order to encourage more efficiency.
