Nishikori reaches Mexico final, seizes career-high No. 4 ranking
The top seed and world No. 5 Nishikori was apparently cruising to an easy victory before the fifth-seeded South African finally solved the Japan ace's serve midway through the second set. Nishikori, however, regrouped. After suffering an early service break in the third set, he broke back before sealing victory in two hours, 2 minutes.
In the final, Nishikori will play either Spaniard David or American qualifier Ryan Harrison, who played in the second semifinal. A Nishikori title in Acapulco will make him Japan's career wins leader with his ninth championship. He is currently tied at eight with evergreen women's star Kimiko Date-Krumm.

今回取り上げるのは、”evergreen”という単語です。LDOCEで調べてみると、
1 an evergreen tree or bush does not lose its leaves in winter
2 an evergreen sportsman, singer etc is still good and popular even though they are fairly old
という２つの定義がありました。今回の記事では2番目の意味で用いられています。また、”ever”と”green”でそれぞれ分けて考えてみても、「”ever（ずっと、常に）”+”green（活気のある若さ）”」というところから、「衰えを知らない、現役続行中の」を意味することが分かります。44歳で未だにコートで活躍し続けるクルム伊達公子を表すのにはぴったりな表現だと思いました。(ninetails)
