環境省は、首都圏に花粉シーズンが到来していると発表しました。花粉症の人にはとてもつらい時期が始まります。

Cedar pollen begins spreading in Tokyo area

The Environment Ministry said Saturday that Japanese cedar pollen has begun spreading in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

According to officials, the pollen has begun scattering into the air five days earlier than average for the first time in 10 years and concentration levels appear to be nearly twice as high as last year, TBS reported.

As pollen levels will be particularly high on dry, windy days, experts are urging people who suffer from hay fever to wear protective masks and or hats, and to hang their clothes to dry inside their homes in order to reduce the overall amount of contact they have with the airborne allergens.

　今回取り上げるのは、”airborne”という単語です。『ジーニアス英和辞典　第4版、大修館書店』で調べてみると、「空輸の、（航空機などが）飛んでいる」などのほかにも、「（花粉・細菌などが）空気で運ばれる」と載っていました（"carried through the air"--LDOCE）。もともと”borne”の原形の”bear”には「もって運ぶ」という意味があるので、”airborne”では「花粉などが空気中に含まれて運ばれる、広まっていく」というニュアンスでしょうか。(ninetails)

PS 以前にもこの表現も含め”−borne”という表現を先輩方が取り上げていらっしゃいました。
