Hakuho gets JSA warning for snipe

UG先生がお好きな『ゴルゴ13』にも違う意味で登場しますが、この語はどのような意味でしょうか。『G5』（大修館書店）を見ると、動詞で「あら探しをする、非難をする」とありましたが、ここでは名詞として用いられています。
『ケンブリッジ英英和辞典』（小学館）の日本語の意味の方は「けなす、あしざまにいう」、第一定義の方は、“to criticize someone in an unpleasant way”とあります。因みに第二定義は、“to shoot people from a place that they cannot see”とありました。
言葉にせよ銃にせよ、何らかの攻撃をしていることは確かなので、どちらの定義も当てはまるような気がしました。「見えないところで」というのがポイントであるというのも一つの要因です。ではなぜ、数ある「非難する」という中でもこの語が選ばれたのでしょうか。
LDOCE5の「非難する」という項のTHESAURUSのコーナーを見てみると、下に示すような語が列挙されていました。
criticize: “to say what you think is bad about someone or something”
be critical of sb/sth: “to criticize someone or something, especially by giving declared reasons for this”
attack: “to criticize someone or something very strongly, especially publicly in the newspapers, or on TV etc”
lay into sb/tear into sb: to criticize someone very strongly for something they have done, especially by shouting at them”
tear sb/sth to shreds: “to find a lot of things wrong with someone’s arguments or ideas and make them seem very weak”
pan: “to strongly criticize a film, play etc in the newspapers, or on TV etc”
be pillored: “to be strongly criticized by a lot of peoplein the newspapers”
condemn: “to say very strongly in public that you do not approve of something or someone, especially because you think they are morally wrong”
find fault with sb/sth: “to criticize things that you think are wrong with something, especially small and unimportant things”
pick holes in sth: “to criticize something by finding many small faults in it, in a way that seems unreasonable and unfair”
knock: “to criticize someone or something, in an unfair and unreasonable way”
以上の様に見ていくと、snipeという語の定義の他に、同じ定義がないというのが読み取れます。
snipeの語源は、CODによりますと、3つ意味が挙げられていました。最初に挙がっていたのが「シギ」という鳥の名前、二番目が「シギを打つ」、三版目が「狙撃する」という意味だそうです。『英語語源辞典』（研究社）によると、「シギ」という意味の次に「マヌケ」（1604年、「オセロー」）と出ていました。
UG先生の講義で音象徴のことについて少し触れ、「絶対性はないが、sn-で始まる語は鼻に関係することが多い」と先生がおっしゃられたのを思い出しました。あの時、先生にした質問は、確かこの語だったと思い出しました。(Kawada)
