New York Today: Sloppy Commute

The mercury is creeping toward 40, however, and plain old rain rules the day.

It could still be slick on roads and sidewalks north of the city, where it was icy overnight.

“The concern is with the ground still being frozen or untreated, even with the temperatures above freezing, it could still make roads kind of slick in spots,” said Brian Ciemnecki of the National Weather Service.

So whatever is falling from the sky, please be careful and leave extra time to get where you’re going.

And note: because of the hazardous weather warnings, dozens of school districts to the north and west are opening late. See list.

Rain will continue to fall — maybe more than half an inch — and it could turn to sleet as it tapers off late tonight.
