「〈物が〉 (分)厚い, 厚みのある」というthinの対義語で知られるthickですが，その他に「なまりの強い〈アクセント〉」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。同辞書にはThe man had a thick Scottish accent.（その男はひどいスコットランドなまりがあった）という用例が挙げられていました。本文も「ひどくなまった日本語」と解釈できます。（Koyamamoto）
