class ringとBrass Rat

2013年にMITの卒業式でDropboxのCEOであるDrew Houstonが行ったCommencement addressからの引用です。
今回はclass ringについて調べてみました。アメリカの高校や大学では卒業記念品としてringが卒業生に送られることがあります。これをclass ringと言いますが，ここでのclassは「授業」ではなく，「同期卒業生」という意味（『スーパー・アンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。同辞書にはI was in the same class with her.（私は彼女と同期の卒業です）という用例がありました。
そして本文にあるBrass RatとはMITの卒業記念リングの総称です。brassは「真鍮の, 黄銅の」，ratは「ネズミ」を指します（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。これはringの色とMITのマスコットbeaverを掛けたもののようです。
教材研究も兼ねてDrew Houstonのスピーチを勉強し始めました。よって今後スピーチからの引用が増えるかもしれません。（Koyamamoto）
