Japan faces specter of a butter-less Christmas
Supermarkets in Japan have been rationing butter since spring because of a shortfall in raw milk production. Now, there's concern there won't be enough for the crucial holiday baking season.
Elaborate and artful "Christmas cakes" are a cherished - if somewhat unlikely - staple of Japan's year-end holidays. The fancy confections - usually a variation of sponge cake covered with vanilla icing, whipped cream and strawberries - are sold from neighborhood convenience stores to the swankiest department stores.
The cakes can sell for as much as 5,000 yen (about $43) each and are often exchanged as gifts.
