WARSAW (AP) — As Frederic Chopin gasped for air on his deathbed in Paris in 1849, he whispered a request that became the stuff of musical legend: Remove my heart after I die and entomb it in Poland. He wanted the symbol of his soul to rest in the native land he pined for from self-imposed exile in France.

この記事で取り上げるのはexhumeという語です。私はなぜかこの語の意味がなんとなく分かりました。なぜなら、exhumeのhumeの語源をなんとなく知っていたからです。humeは「地面」（『英語語源辞典』、研究社）、ex-というのは「外へ向かって」という接頭辞です。２つを合わせると、「（死体）を墓から発掘する」という意味になります。LDOCE5で調べてみますと、堅い表現で“to remove a dead body from the ground, especially in order to check the cause of death”とありました。調査のために使われているのでこの語は適切ですね。(Kawada)
