Wild card Ito stuns top-seeded Wawrinka at Japan Open

Wild card Tatsuma Ito shocked top seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 7-5, 6-2 in their first-round match at the Rakuten Japan Open on Tuesday afternoon.

With the roof open at a sun-drenched Ariake Colosseum, Ito took the initiative from the outset and never looked back, prevailing before a partisan crowd in just 1 hour and 19 minutes.

Wawrinka, ranked No. 4 in the world, was sluggish throughout the contest while committing a high number of unforced errors. He put up a bit of resistance in the opening set, but could not muster much of an effort in the second on the way to defeat.

記事の中で気になった単語はlooked backです。このPVは「(1)後ろを振り返る、(2)（…を）回想［回顧］する，顧みる」というのが一般的な意味だと思いますが、以前、先生に教わった否定文で用いられるlook backを思い出しました。

ここはneverをともなって、「後ろを振り向くことはなかった」から「（前進あるのみで/少々のミスは気にせずに）積極的にのぞんだ」という意味で用いられているのではと考えました。このように一見なんでもなく見えるフレーズにも英語的な面白さが隠されているんだと改めて思わされました。

伊藤選手は2回戦でドイツのベッカー選手と対戦する予定ですが、過去に勝利したこともあるということで、今後のご活躍に期待です。(Green)
