Good morning on this drippy Thursday.
You’ve been missing this rain, really you have.
Since midsummer, rainfall has been only about one-third of normal.
The city and environs have been declared “abnormally dry” — the last stage before drought — by the U.S. Drought Monitor.
It has been 71 days since we’ve had a day with an inch of rain.
Not for lack of trying.
確認程度のものです。environsは「…を取り巻く，包囲する」という意味の動詞 environから来たものでしょう。
「都市＋environs」という形で，「都市とその周辺，周囲の地域」（"the districts around a city"）という意味を表します。この辺りでしたら，「東京（都心）とその近郊」に相当しますか。そういえばかつて住んだロンドンやバンクーバーの周辺はそれぞれGreater London，Greater Vancouverと呼ばれていました。今もそうなんでしょうか。（UG）
