Stem cell transplant gives hope to patients suffering eye diseases

Eye disease patients have welcomed the world's first transplant of a retina sheet made using induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, as doctors seek to use the cells in regenerative medicine.

The transplant was carried out by a team of scientists in Japan on Sept. 12, on a patient with age-related macular degeneration. The treatment came seven years after Kyoto University professor Shinya Yamanaka developed iPS cells, which can turn into any type of human body tissue.
