今回は、箱根駅伝のコースが変わるという記事からの落穂拾いを致します。本文のstageは、「舞台」という意味ではなく、「区間」という意味です（『リーダーズ英和辞典』第３版、研究社）。元々駅伝の「駅」とは、『日本書紀』の時代からある古い言葉で、首都と地方の間に設けられた中継所のことだそうです。そこには乗り継ぎようの馬が用意されていたそうです。それがもとで駅伝というものが始まったのではないでしょうか。確認してみると、『リーダーズ英和辞典』の第４語義には、「（昔の道中の）駅」という意味が最初に書かれていました。箱根駅伝に即して言うと、「５区、６区,」と言ったところでしょうか。（Kawada）

A slight change to the course of the prestigious Hakone-Tokyo college ekiden has necessitated wiping out a number of records for the race, the federation that governs the annual competition announced Monday.
