Soccer: 10-man Costa Rica beat Greece on pens to reach quarterfinals
Costa Rica overcame the second-half sending off of defender Oscar Duarte to beat Greece 5-3 on penalties on Sunday and book themselves a World Cup quarterfinal date with the Netherlands after a 1-1 extra-time draw.
Costa Rica scored their first four kicks and defender Michael Umana sent Los Ticos into the last eight for the first time after goalkeeper and man of the match Keylor Navas had saved Theofanis Gekas' effort.
Captain Bryan Ruiz gave Costa Rica the lead in the 52nd minute and although Duarte was dismissed midway through the second half, they looked to have done enough to hold on for victory in 90 minutes.
But Greece leveled in the dying seconds of regulation through Sokratis Papastathopoulos to take the game to extra time before Navas, who produced several key saves during the match, performed heroics in the shootout.
"This is an unbelievable moment and we are very grateful to God because he has allowed us go through this experience," said Spain-based goalkeeper Navas.
