University of Tokyo, Kyoto University move to reform exam-based admission process

Two of Japan's top universities, Kyoto University and the University of Tokyo, have decided to reform their traditional paper-based entrance exam systems in order to recruit students who are more than just "test-smart."

By placing greater weight on interviews and extracurricular activities, the new entrance exam scheme that will be introduced at the University of Tokyo beginning in the 2016 school year aims to provide opportunities for applicants who are not traditional test-smart exam takers.

The institution will abolish the second term of its entrance exam, and will allot a quota of 100 students to be accepted through the new admission system. The University of Tokyo accepts around 3,100 students each year, and around 3 percent of students entering in the 2016 school year will be selected via the new exam scheme. Each of the institution's 10 departments will adopt the new system.

〜＋smartは「〜に敏感な，〜に聡い，〜に慣れた」などの意味を表しますが，ここは「テスト慣れした，受験テクニックに長けた」あたりの意味。

ただし，この口語表現は文脈や〜部分に来るものに注意して，使い分けねばなりません。例えば，streetが来るstreetsmartは，「世慣れした，現実をよく知っている」などの意味ですが，しばしば悪い意味や皮肉などで使われることがあります。同様にbooksmartは「本に慣れた」から「学識のある」という意味ですが，これも同様です。英語ではよく使われる言い回しですが，英和辞典では解説したものが少ないようです。（UG）
