take to streets #3

Brazilian teachers take to Rio de Janeiro streets

Hundreds of striking teachers seeking higher wages took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Friday.

Brazilian police were out in force in case of possible clashes. Among those in the crowd were adherents to the "Black Block" anarchist style of protest and vandalism that attacks banks and other symbols of global power.

There were no reports of clashes by Friday night.

Protesters also staged a demonstration in Rio against World Cup spending. They are demanding that more be spent to improve Brazil's woeful public services, like schools, hospitals and security.

Protests across Brazil have lessened in size since last year's anti-government demonstrations that saw a million people take to the streets on a single night.

take to the road, take to the hills, take to one's heels, take to sb's feet, take to the highway, take to the woods..

(UG)
