豚流行性下痢（PED）と呼ばれる感染症が猛威をふるっています。人間には感染しませんが、農業国のフランスは、感染が拡大する国々からの豚肉の輸入禁止措置をとりました。

Pig epidemic spreads to 33 prefectures nationwide

Porcine epidemic diarrhea, or PED, is spreading nationwide, with more than 330,000 pigs in 33 prefectures having contracted the disease as of April 24.

The illness has killed about 83,000 swine, mainly piglets, according to the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry. This is the first major nationwide epidemic of its kind since 1996 and has prompted great concern in the pork industry.

PED affects pigs and boars, causing severe diarrhea and other symptoms. Grown pigs can recover from PED, but the mortality rate is said to be from 50 percent to 100 percent among newborn piglets, which usually suffer from dehydration and other symptoms. PED was first reported in Britain in 1971, and was initially found in Japan in the 1980s.

porcineは「豚の、豚みたいな」という意味の形容詞。

「動物形容詞」（？）を作るには語尾を-yや-ish にする、-likeを付加するという２通りのやり方が知られていますが（piggy、pig-like）、記事のようにラテン語系の形容詞（-ine）が使われる場合もあります。例えば犬は、ブログでもおなじみのcanine（cf. K9）、ネコはfelineでしたね（仏車 プジョーにもそんなタイプがありました）。ついでに（ついでではないけど）いくつか思いつくままにあげてみましょう。

牛はbovine、雄牛（bull）はtaurine（ファイト！一発！）。馬はequine、鹿はcervine、キツネはvulpine。オオカミは lupine。ハリーポッターでおなじみのヘビ（serpent）はserpentine、crowはcorvineだったかな。さらにeagleはaquilineなどなど。

もっともどれも生物学的で、かつ、堅いので普段使われるものではありませんが、こんな知識も英語を深く理解するときには必要になりましょう。私の場合、高校の教員になったときに、同僚の英語主任に植え付けられました（それまでほとんど知らなかった！）。以上、朝一の連想でした。（UG）
