At Japanese Palace, Obama Gets a French Meal
The 80-year-old emperor in his remarks recalled visits to the U.S. stretching back more than six decades. “I fondly remember the warm welcome that the people of your country extended to us each time,” he said, according to a White House pool report.
Mr. Obama referred to Japan’s March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami and, obliquely, to last year’s World Series when Boston Red Sox reliever Koji Uehara pitched the final three outs of his team’s series-clinching victory.
“We stand together in moments of joy–as when Japanese baseball players help propel America’s teams to victory. And we stand together in moments of pain as we did three years ago,” the president said.

obliquelyは「斜めに」という意味ですが、ここは少し違う意味で用いられています。「斜めに」から「まっすぐではなく」→「遠回しに、直接ではないが」あたりでしょうか。(UG)
