Caroline Kennedy sends JFK’s challenge to be engraved on Yamagata monument

YONEZAWA, Yamagata Prefecture--The inspirational words of U.S. President John F. Kennedy from his 1961 inaugural address urging greater citizen involvement will be included in a monument here honoring Uesugi Yozan (1751-1822), the ninth head of the Yonezawa domain.

Kennedy’s daughter and the current U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, sent the famed phrase to a group that is engaged in erecting the monument on the top of nearby Mount Shiratakayama.

“The former president’s (inaugural) address and Yozan’s teachings have something in common," said Kiichi Saito, chairman of the group that is erecting the monument. "We want to spread Yozan’s spirit to people around the world.” The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for May 13.

challengeはもちろん「挑戦」ですが、もうひとつ忘れてならないのが、「(競技・競争などへの)参加呼びかけ」という意味です。(UG)
