クリミア半島の「独立」をめぐってウクライナとロシアの対立が激化しているのはご承知の通り。

記事の中に出てくる”de-escalate”が気になりました。接頭語”de”は「否定, 強調, 下降,分離,悪化」という性質があり，”escalate”は「上昇する」などの積極的な意味を持つ単語です。この2つが合わさることにより，消極的意味になるという予測をして，『Wisdom英和辞典（第三版）』（三省堂）で調べると「（段階的に規模・程度が）縮小する」という意味がありました。「ロシア側がクリミアに対する軍事介入を縮小しない場合は・・・」などという意味であると考えました。（Ume）
